We recently had the pleasure of hosting Kiiu-Pearl Ringuette Shimura as an intern at the Brain Simulation Section. Kiiu wrote a short report about her experience at the lab:
I am Kiiu-Pearl Ringuette Shimura. I am fifteen years of age and presently attend the Schiller-Gymnasium Berlin. This is a brief account of my experience in the Brain Simulation section of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité.
It was for my 9th grade mandatory Internship, which I had the privilege to delve into the unexpected realm of research and sciences.
Beginning with my summarized day to day. In the first week, I would commence with spirited conversations with members of the staff, for which they would kindly prepare aspects of their work to present to me. Each elucidation was explained in a way, which was apprehensive to myself: a 15 year old with near no afore theoretical experience. This goes to show how undoubtedly well-versed and knowledgeable the staff were on the subjects, as it is said that the most challenging task is to explain a comprehensive topic in a simple manner. I would subsequently add information which I found to be particularly striking to a form of mind map.
This mind map is what I utilized as a reference point in the second week, in which I had the opportunity to use their TVBase program to simulate the especially intriguing concepts and visualize their effects on the human brain.
Conclusively, I truly believe that this internship helped refine my interest in and views on varying theoretical, philosophical and scientific subjects and has shaped my understanding of a work life in such a lab.
I would like to end this article by stating my thanks. I am inordinately grateful to have had this opportunity and would highly recommend it to any intrigued individual.
